HCST 499 / PUBL 398 / HIST 494: Public Health in Historical, Philosophical, and Social Context
This course will take an integrative approach to some of the major issues of public health, such as sanitation reform, eugenics, the disparities between health in wealthy and developing nations, and the tension between civil rights and the public good. We begin with an introduction to the field paying special attention to the epistemological, ethical, and legal dimensions of these issues. As we progress into our historical survey we will focus on cultural and social determinants of these issues, how they correspond to policy and practice in the present, and what, if anything, we might do to create change.
