The Black Student Union (BSU) would like to extend our heartfelt apologies to the entire UMBC community. On September 14th, at the first General Body Meeting during a community building activity, a homophobic and misogynistic question was posed that isolated UMBC communities that we strive to uplift and include. We deeply regret and apologize for participation in alienating and harming these communities. We understand the gravity of this situation and acknowledge that it contradicts the values of respect, diversity, and inclusivity that the Black Student Union stands for. It is our responsibility to address this incident and work towards a more inclusive and supportive campus environment.
In a concerted effort to do this, the BSU’s Executive Board has been actively working with Campus Life, i3b, and our Advisor to adequately address the harm done and the broader organizational issues that arose from this incident. More specifically, we have plans to implement change in areas like immediate action responses, educational initiatives, reviewing organizational activities, transparency and accountability.
Once again, we humbly apologize for our role in this incident and are committed to learning from it and making meaningful changes. Our goal is to rebuild trust within the UMBC community and create a more inclusive environment for everyone. We recognize that actions speak louder than words, and we are dedicated to taking concrete steps to make this right.
Thank you for your understanding and support as we move forward.
Sincerely,
Black Student Union
