Re curriculum, we reviewed Matt’s draft of a letter requesting information from faculty about climate content in existing courses. We decided to ask administrative leaders to endorse this survey in order to encourage responses. Matt has emailed the draft as a Google Doc open for editing.
Re events, Jason reported on his meeting with Lenn Caron and others about the Climate Action Steering Committee’s proposal to sponsor speakers. Their plans are ambitious, but potentially complementary to ours. We will contact Lenn to encourage additional coordination of efforts.
We discussed the events group’s proposals for a major event in the fall. (Jason’s memo on this has been posted under the 1/29 date.) With time short to organize such an event, we decided that we should soon identify a theme or title for the event, and major components of it. Along the lines of our previous discussions that we should promote agency in dealing with the climate change challenge, this event could emphasize selected current issues, and be linked to our curriculum effort and administration actions.
We also discussed Tanvi’s and Jasper’s proposal for a summer CoLab to document UMBC’s climate action efforts.
Roy distributed his brief outline from several years ago about a multidisciplinary climate course. This will also be posted to the groups page. We will discuss this next meeting, and also discuss topic #2 from the 1/29 meeting curriculum notes: Incorporating more pedagogy for activism.
Roy will distribute Shawn Blum’s slides and spreadsheets on UMBC’s renewable electricity purchase options, as well as some email correspondence on this issue.
