Toastmasters Demo for Postdoctoral Research Associates
Effective Communication for job talks, interviews, and conference presentations
If you are a Postdoctoral Research Associate at UMBC, then you will need to develop strong communications skills for your career. The need to develop these skills will be relevant as you are preparing for a job talk, going to a conference, or just planning to improve you English presentation skills. For any of these skills, we believe that you will be interested in checking out Toastmasters. Toastmasters is a public speaking and leadership organization with a program for effective communication. There is interest in starting a Toastmasters club on campus, and we want to our Postdoctoral Research Associates to take consider participating in this endeavor. Graduate students, faculty, and staff are welcome to attend.
Join us for a demonstration of a Toastmasters meeting, with the theme "Job Talk" on:

This meeting on 3/8/13 will provide demonstrations, and will serve as a meeting to gauge interest. If you can attend, please login to MyUMBC and click "I can attend." If you cannot attend, but are interested, please let us know via the comment section below. Whether you are attending, or just interested, please click the "paw" in the top left corner if you support the idea of having a Toastmasters group at UMBC.
We will need the commitment of 20 people to apply for an official chapter. Having a chapter on campus can provide you with a valuable resource. It is a great way for you to practice your presentations, practice job talks, overcome shyness, and practice speaking in English if it is not your first language.
Dr. Judith Kadarusman Pollack, Assistant Director of our PROF-it Professors-in-Training program, and facilitator for workshops with postdocs, will lead a DEMO seminar for Toastmasters on Friday, Mar. 8, 10-11:30 AM. Dr. Pollack was one of the leaders for the Genesis Toastmasters group, and is certified to lead the demonstration. Read more about Dr. Pollack at Stand Up and Speak Well .
