Tuesday, April 17, 2012 · 1 - 4 PM
Now through May 9th, the Special Collections Department presents an exhibit of classic comic books titled "All Lurid, Unsavory, Gruesome Illustrations
Shall Be Eliminated: The Comics Code as seen through the UMBC Comics Collection," tracing the history of the Comics Code from its inception in 1954 through its eventual decline. The Comics Code was a self-censorship code established by the comics industry, in order to escape governmental censorship. The Code brought an end to the Golden Age of comics, but led to a new era of creativity that both adhered to and skirted the Code.
This exhibit presents rare comics from the pre-Code era, as well as Silver Age comics, underground comics, magazines, and rarely seen original comic book art from legends such as Jack Kirby and John Romita.
Special Collections is open Monday through Friday from 1-4pm, with extended hours from 1-7pm on Thursdays. Other hours are available by appointment.
