Lisi Raskin: Visiting Artist Talk
Thursday, April 21, 2016 · 4:30 - 6 PM
Since 1998, Brooklyn-based artist Lisi Raskin has traveled to the Arctic Circle, former East German and Yugoslav Atomic bunkers, and through the American west exploring the intersection of nuclear-age fears and utopian mythologies as they manifest in oral histories and the architectures of the Cold War. Raskin’s on-site research has informed the making of paintings, drawings, objects, videos, and large, constructed environments that she has exhibited internationally at institutions including Kunsthaus Graz, Casino Luxembourg, the Frankfurter Kunstverein, the Contemporary Art Center, Vilnius, PS1/MoMA Contemporary Art Center, the Blanton Museum of Art, the Center for Curatorial Studies/Hessel Museum at Bard College, and the Rubin Museum of Art. Her web projects have been published in Triple Canopy magazine, with The Dia Foundation, and on Creative Time Global Reports where she is a regular contributor. She has built large-scale environments at the 11th International Istanbul Biennale, the 2nd Athens Biennale, and the 3rd Singapore Biennale. She has installed site-sensitive sound projects in the 1st Time Machine Biennale of Contemporary Art, D-O Ark Underground and the Momentum 7 Biennale of Nordic Art.
In 2013, Raskin was the recipient of a Creative Time Global Residency grant. This body of research was focused on the exploration of Soviet infrastructural projects, war museums, and monuments in Kabul and Herat in Afghanistan and was the subject of two-solo presentations in New York City at Art in General and Churner and Churner. Raskin's most recent work deliberately explores the intersections between utopian architecture, community connectivity, and art pedagogy.
Raskin was born in Miami, Florida. She received her BA in Fine Arts from Brandeis University in 1996 and her MFA from Columbia University in 2003. She has been the recipient of numerous awards and grants including the Guna S Mundheim Berlin Prize at the American Academy in Berlin, a Quimby Foundation Grant, Mayer Foundation Grant, and the Hayward Prize from the American Austrian Foundation. Raskin has taught at many schools and institutions in the USA and abroad including Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Columbia University in New York, the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, the Universitaet der Kunst in Berlin, Germany, and the Royal Academy of Art in Stockholm, Sweden. Raskin is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Painting, Drawing, and Sculpture at Tyler School of Art, Temple University in Philadelphia, PA.
