The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang, is a high fantasy novel that takes the readers on a journey through a war torn empire which had its inspiration drawn from Chinese history and mythology.
Rin, a war orphan, wanting to escape the confines of a forced arranged marriage takes an entrance exam to the prestigious military academy of the Nikara Empire. While gaining entrance to the academy might have helped her escape one challenge, it lands her in the middle of another. Surrounded by the children of the elite, as an orphan and dark-skinned peasant girl from the south, leads to many struggles as she becomes a target for her color, class, and gender. But through it all discovers she possesses a lethal and unearthly power and aptitude for shamanism. War breaks out between the Nikaran Empire and the enemy Federation of Mugen, who had occupied and almost conquered Nikara during the first and second Poppy Wars. As the third Poppy War sparks, Rin and her powers may be the only way to save her people.
