Performing "Pictures at an Exhibition"
The Department of Music presents pianist Massimo Cottica, whose program will feature selections from the Années de pèlerinage by Franz Liszt andPictures at an Exhibition by Modest Mussorgsky.
Massimo Cottica is professor of chamber music and vocal chamber music at the Conservatorio di Musica "Giuseppe Nicolini" in Piacenza, where he organizes concerts, master classes, conferences and invites artists and teachers. In 1985 he launched his solo career, playing in the Sala Grande "Giuseppe Verdi" of the Conservatorio di Milano with the Orchestra dei Pomeriggi Musicali, and in 1986 he won the first price at the Rozzano Piano Competition dedicated to Frédéric Chopin. In the same year he won the first price in other two international chamber music competitions in Stresa and Tradate.
During the master classes held by Aldo Ciccolini in Sermoneta in 1988 he was awarded a scholarship and in 1989 and 1990 was invited to participate in the summer classes of György Sandor in Cori. He was piano accompanist in the master classes by James Galway in Weggis, Switzerland, and Siegfried Palm in Perugia. He has made live recordings for Radio 3 and SDR 1 (Süd-Deutsche-Rundfunk). He is active as a performer and teacher throughout Europe and the United States. Since 2007 he has conducted the Orchestra Sinfonica Giuseppe Verdi in Milan.
