Is euthanasia (physician-assisted suicide) permissible?
Dr. Stacey, Mr. O'Neill / Fr. DeAscanis, Dr. Hoehner debate.
Thursday, November 6, 2014 · 7:30 - 9:30 PM
Euthanasia, or physician-assisted suicide, is when a suffering, dying patient requests to end his or her life in place of continuing medical care. The issue gets into deeper questions of the value of life, the physician's obligation to "do no harm", a utilitarian view of choosing an option of least pain, the freedom to choose to die gracefully and without agony, and the ability of a distressed patient to make a rational decision.
Patrick O'Neill (PhD candidate in Bioinformatics) and Dr. Simon Stacey (Director of the Honors College), both of UMBC, will argue in favor of the motion to permit euthanasia. Dr. Paul Hoehner, MD (physician and bioethics from Johns Hopkins) and Rev. Michael DeAscanis, (Vocational Director from the Archdiocese of Baltimore) will argue against the motion. There will be pizza provided and a chance for students to ask questions.
Philosophers Anonymous will host a mock debate:
