UMBC Viet Nam Medical Assistance Program (VNMAP) and Be The Match Foundation are hosting the semesterly Bone Marrow Drive on May 8th, 2017 from 11 AM to 3 PM at the Commons Terrace.
Be The Match Foundation is a non-profit organization that helps provide bone marrow transplants from volunteer donors to patients with various types of bone or blood cancers in the United States. (For more information about the organization, please check out:
Our goal with this event is to reach out to our campus and raise awareness about bone marrow donation, especially with the Asian-American community since they are one of the most under-represented demographics in the bone marrow registry.
Volunteers will advertise by holding up our eye-catching signs and posters near the breezeway at the day of the event or help at our information desk with a Be The Match representative to register donors and assist donors in cheek swabbing.
It would be really helpful if your organization can help spread the word and encourage your members to not only volunteer BUT register to become a potential donor at the bone marrow drive as well!
Here is the volunteer sign up sheet:
**A little note about the donation process at the drive**
At the drive, committed donors will be registered into Be The Match Bone Marrow Registry and have their cheek cells swabbed. The swabs will be collected and used by the organization to match you with patients in need in the future. So there will be no actual "marrow" donation or extraction at the drive.
