Open House for M.A. in Historical Studies
With fully funded teaching and research assistantships, access to conference and research funding, and an opportunity to work with nationally recognized and award-winning faculty, our program is an attractive option for students seeking to deepen their understanding of history and pursue careers in academia, government, and the nonprofit sector.
UMBC’s history faculty has nationally recognized specialists in the field who give students close personal attention. Our research interests cover a wide range of time periods and topics. Our particular strengths are in the field of Public History, the history of the United States, pre-modern and modern Europe, and East Asia, with transnational and thematic foci on Global History, Political and Policy History, and the History of Inequality and Justice. Our students go on to top-notch Ph.D. programs and a host of local public history institutions. Post-graduate destinations for UMBC history students include the UPenn and Northwestern Ph.D. programs, the Smithsonian, and the Maryland State Archives.
