Clothesline Project T-Shirt Making
Decorate a shirt to add to our Clothesline Project Display
Students, faculty, and staff have made t-shirts describing their experience with relationship violence and sexual assault. On Tuesday, April 16th, these t-shirts will be hung shoulder-to-shoulder on a clothesline for public viewing, as if the survivors are there themselves, telling us their stories.
The Clothesline Project gives voice to the experiences of survivors, victims, families, and friends who have been affected by violence. The Women's Center will be providing materials for those who identify as survivors or victims of violence to decorate t-shirts to add to our clothesline project display.
UMBC community members impacted by Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) are encouraged to make a t-shirt for the display prior to April 9th.
Hours in the Women's Center:
Mondays through Thursdays from 9:30 AM - 5 PM
UMBC community members interested in volunteering for this event (Clothesline Project) are encouraged to email the Women's Center at
womens.center@umbc.edu. Setting up the project takes lots of hands so volunteers are greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Women's Center Staff

The Bystander Moment
Transforming Rape Culture at its Roots
In association with the SAPH and Green Dot, join us to watch clips from the documentary "The Bystander Moment: Transforming Rape Culture at its Roots" featuring Jackson Katz, and discuss them with a host from Green Dot.
About the Film:The film tells the story of the innovative bystander approach developed by Jackson Katz and his colleagues. Katz explores the role of bystanders -- especially friends, teammates, classmates, and co-workers -- in perpetuating sexual harassment, sexual assault, and other forms of gender violence. Katz also gives special attention to the peer culture dynamics -- in particular the male peer normalize sexism and misogyny while silencing other men in the face of abuse. Along the way, The Bystander Moment stresses the crucial importance of appealing to people not as potential perpetrators or passive spectators, but as active bystanders and potential leaders who have a positive role to play in challenging and changing the sexist cultural norms that too often lead to gender violence. The result is an indispensable educational tool in the ongoing struggle to prevent sexism and misogyny and promote gender equality.
The Green Dot program is a violence prevention and bystander intervention program launching here at UMBC. The goal of the program is to engage a critical mass of our community in a behavior change where violence will not be tolerated and the end result will be a reduction in violence.
This discussion-based program follows the Women’s Center Brave Space model to provide a welcoming environment and thoughtful community to engage in conversations focused on support and healing for survivors of sexual violence. This group centers the experiences of survivors and their allies; we request that students do not use this space for class research or interviews.
Please note: UMBC is committed to creating an accessible and inclusive environment for all students, staff, faculty, and visitors. If you have difficulties accessing any of the materials on our site or any of our events or discussions, please contact us so that we can provide an alternative format and/or remedy any accessibility challenges.

The Clothesline Project Display
In Honor of Sexual Assault Awareness Month
Students, faculty, and staff have made t-shirts describing their experience with sexual assault and relationship violence. In recognition of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, on Tuesday, April 16th, 2024 these t-shirts will be hung shoulder-to-shoulder on a clothesline for public viewing, as if the survivors are there themselves, telling us their stories.
The Clothesline Project gives voice to the experiences of survivors, victims, family, and friends who have been affected by violence. All are encouraged to attend and participate.
UMBC community members impacted by interpersonal violence are encouraged to make a t-shirt for the display prior to April 16th so it can be included in the display. Supplies will be available throughout April 1st to April 17th in the Women's Center and shirts made on or after April 9th will be included in future displays including Intimate Partner Violence Awareness Month, October 2024.
UMBC community members interested in volunteering for this event are encouraged to email the Women's Center at womenscenter@umbc.edu. Setting up the project takes lots of hands so volunteers are greatly appreciated!

Green Dot Training
Want to be certified in Bystander Intervention? Come Train!
For questions or for accessibility requests, contact us at womenscenter@umbc.edu

UMBC's Take Back the Night 2024
A Sexual Assault Awareness Month Event
In recognition of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, the Women's Center is proud to revive our once annual, much beloved Take Back the Night. On Thursday, April 25th, we invite you to join us on Commons Main Street--let's take back the night!!
Events and activities include:
- The Survivor Speak Out (begins ~5:15 on Main Street)
- Campus March Against Sexual Violence
- The Clothesline Project
- Community Resource Fair and Craftivism (including the opportunity to make Clothesline Project t-shirts, Dear Survivor letters, and self-care takeaways) and We Believe You discussion group hosted in the Women's Center post-march.
There is limited seating for the survivor speak-out. We recommend you arrive early. As seating fills up, we encourage you to make your way up to the balcony area on the 2nd floor of The Commons. We also encourage you to check out the community resources as you're waiting for the speak-out to begin.
Stay tuned by liking the Women's Center on Facebook and following us on Instagram and Twitter. #UMBCtbtn is the official hashtag, so follow us there, too! You can see picturesfrom past years Take Back the Night on our blog.
For more information about UMBC's Take Back the Night, you can visit our What You Need to Know about TBTN blog series. Posts include more information about the survivor speak-out, the march, Greek Week involvement, and the post-march craftivism. More posts will be shared and/or updated leading up to 2024's event.
UMBC students who identify as survivors are invited to speak at the speak-out forum. You can contact the Women's Center for more details, but you do not have to sign up in advanced to speak at the forum.
If you are interested in volunteering for this event, please contact the Women's Center at womenscenter@umbc.edu for more details.
**Please note that we are requesting any one taking photos beyond personal use (i.e. media, class assignment) should reach out to the Women's Center to request a press pass prior to TBTN. Please email womenscenter@umbc.edu for details. Please read our blog about ethical photography at events like TBTN**
For accommodation needs or support, please contact the Women's Center at womencenter@umbc.edu or 410-455-2714 or stopping by to meet with us.
