The Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering (CSEE) at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) invites applications for a non-tenure track position at the rank of Lecturer. This full-time position begins in Fall 2022. The position may also have teaching and administrative responsibilities in the computer science program offered at The Universities at Shady Grove, in Montgomery County, Maryland.

The preferred qualification is a master’s degree in computer science or a closely related discipline. Ideal candidates will also have evidence of strong organizational skills. Experience in academia, industry, and government will be considered in the evaluation of the candidate. Candidates who have had a non-academic career with a demonstrated commitment to teaching are encouraged to apply and may want to emphasize their industry experience.

The Lecturer position is renewable. Lecturers teach a wide range of courses, primarily at the undergraduate level. They advise students, mentor teaching assistants, and help shape departmental practices and policies. Lecturers are expected to continue their professional growth and will have the opportunity to be promoted through the ranks of Senior Lecturer and Principal Lecturer.  

The CSEE Department is large and growing, with a diverse community of over 2,000 undergraduate majors in computer science and computer engineering.  Professors of the Practice, along with Lecturers and a cadre of tenure-track faculty, are the driving force behind the department’s broad effort to ensure a quality education for our undergraduates: working to improve computing education, curriculum, diversity, and student support. CSEE faculty collaborate with the Center for Women in Technology to increase the diversity of those who create technology, with programs designed for women in computing and engineering and transfer students from underrepresented groups.  In addition to our undergraduate programs, the department has graduate programs in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, cybersecurity, and data science. Our faculty enjoy collaboration within the department, across departments, and with partners outside the university.

The 5th annual National Cybersecurity Virtual Career Fair, sponsored by National Cybersecurity Training and Education (NCyTE) Center and the CAE in Cybersecurity Community, is right around the corner! The career fair brings together students and alumni from over 300 institutions across the Nation designated as Centers of Academic Excellence in Cybersecurity with employers offering internships, temporary, part-time, and full-time employment. This year, the National Cybersecurity Virtual Career Fair will take place on Friday, September 17th, 2021, from 1 pm to 4 pm ET.

UMBC is soliciting applications for its Postdoctoral Fellows Program for Faculty Diversity in all areas with applications due by October 2, 2020.

UMBC is dedicated to ensuring a diverse, scholarly environment and encouraging outstanding individuals to enter the academic profession. This fellowship program is intended to support promising scholars who are committed to diversity in the academy and prepares those scholars for possible tenure track appointments at UMBC. We are particularly interested in receiving applications from individuals who are members of groups that historically have been underrepresented in the professoriate.

During the two-year fellowship, fellows are provided teaching and research mentors and specialized professional development opportunities. In addition to pursuing their research agenda, fellows teach one course a year in the host department. Successful candidates for the Program are selected on the basis of scholarly promise and potential to add to the diversity of the UMBC community. Applicants must have completed their doctoral degree when the term of appointment commences and must be no more than three years beyond receiving the Ph.D.

The College of Engineering and Information Technology (COEIT) of the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) invites applications for a 12-month, Full Time, Non-tenure track Professor of the Practice position in the Engineering and Computing Education Program (ECEP).

RESPONSIBILITIES: Reporting to the Dean of COEIT, this position serves as the Graduate Program Director of UMBC’s suite of industry-oriented engineering programs leading to a graduate certificate, and Master of Science degree, and Masters of Professional Studies degree. The suite of engineering programs include Systems Engineering, Engineering Management, Technical Management, Integrated Product Development & Manufacturing and Project Management. These programs are offered to professional students through a partnership between the College of Engineering and Information Technology and UMBC’s Division of Professional Studies (DPS). The incumbent will teach up to two courses per semester within the suite of engineering programs. In addition to teaching, the incumbent will: oversee curriculum and instruction; recruit and supervise qualified part-time faculty; collaborate with DPS on program marketing, student recruitment and retention activities; pursue business development opportunities with industry; manage program Advisory Boards; build the programs and connect the programs with other existing and new opportunities,  and carry out the administrative duties associated with academic program oversight.

We have formal programs including “launch committees” to encourage regular and structured mentorship for faculty to start successfully, mentoring programs to provide support in the longer term, shared services for grant finance support, grant writing and editing support, monthly gatherings in which faculty share lunch and community, and we encourage all of our faculty to participate in the university’s eminent scholar mentor program to build relationships with leaders in the field beyond UMBC. Qualifications

Applicants should have or be completing a Ph.D. in a relevant discipline, have demonstrated the ability to pursue a research program, and have a strong commitment to undergraduate and graduate teaching. Candidates will be expected to build and lead a team of student researchers, obtain external research support, and teach both graduate and undergraduate courses.

We welcome candidates in all areas of specialization. Candidates that have research interests in collaborative areas between CS, CE and Electrical Engineering are encouraged to apply.

Some areas of interest for CS applicants include but are not limited to: information assurance and cybersecurity; mobile, wearable, and IoT systems; big data with an emphasis on machine learning, data science, brain-inspired methods, and high-performance computing; knowledge and database systems; visualization.

Some areas of interest for CE applicants include but are not limited to: hardware focused applicants in Digital, Analog, Mixed-mode VLSI design and test, integrated sensors and processing, SoC, new and emerging design technologies, hardware implementations for neuroscience and health-related wearables, cyber physical systems, hardware security and assurance.
