Prohibit Animal Testing? [Debate]
Tuesday, October 7, 2014 · 7:30 - 9:30 PM
Many biologists use animal models to perform research, but animal rights advocates often claim that this research is unethical. Many scientists respond to this critique that, while perhaps undesirable, animal testing provides the best possible option for such research and without it we would not have many advances. Do the benefits to humans and domestic animals outweigh the cost to laboratory animals? Some say no. Amy Payne from the UMBC Department of Philosophy and Kathleen Conlee from the Humane Society are visiting with the bold claim to "Prohibit Animal Testing." Against them in the debate will be UMBC biology graduate student's Patrick O'Neill and Aaron Sathyanesan. The debate will begin on October 7th at 7:30pm in Lecture Hall 1. Undergraduate judges will determine a winner for this debate (email dimercurio@umbc.edu if you are interested in being a judge).
